The Spirit Never Dies
(Z/E, takes place during "Psychocrypt;"
title is paraphrased from a quote of Niko's in "New Frontier")

As long as Zachary was obssessed on rescuing Eliza's psychocrystal, the Queen could torture them both. Neither of them could allow the Queen to win.

As the chamber activated, tearing Zachary's mind and soul from his body, Eliza made her move, reaching out with all the power she possessed. "Zachary, my love! I've missed you so! You must be strong. Our spirits will always be one..."

His eyes opened wide as he beheld the vision of her. Her plea wrapped around his heart, bound in love and duty.

As his body fell comatose, they embraced in spirit, together once more.

Star Search
(takes place after "Murder on the Andorian Express," "Battle of the Bandits," and "Tortuna Rocks")

"Oh joy; we're escorting Eve Wheiner to some blasted music contest," Goose snorted.

"Well, my Gooseman, you DO fit the criteria for 'rockstar bodyguard,'" Doc snickered.

"Why didn't the Commander give this to you two?"

"We did our time on the S.S. Christie. Now it's yours and Zachary's turn," Niko smiled.

*************

"Welcome back, Captain. How'd it go?"

"Next time, Doc, I'm insisting on the four of us."

"What happened, Zachary?"

"Eve ordered Goose to sing a duet with her, Niko."

"That doesn't sound so bad."

"The bad part was restraining Eve after Tri-D Video offered the contract to Goose instead."

Spammers Beware
(Doc POV)

"Ahhh, the pleasures of being planetside. Got my coffee, my computer, peace and quiet. Now, let's see what messages I've got... YIKES! How'd this get through the filters?! Enlarge WHAT? Send money WHERE? Attachments from WHO? All right, this means WAR!" Activating his implant, Doc cracked open his CDU. "Pathfinder, Tripwire, go track down the real sources of this junk!"

"Will do, Doc!"

"You got it!"

"Looks like the subjects of the mails fooled our filters. Let's see how their original servers like being overloaded by automatically bounced messages... awww, the poor things kicked their byte buckets. What a shame!"

Musings of an Avian Shaman
(Mistwalker POV, takes place between "Mistwalker" and "Natural Balance;"
Magic Man = Zach and One-Who-Asks-Many-Questions = Dr. Audra Miles)

Fenokee is at peace, quiet after the storm.

The creatures of our forest eat the mineral magic of foe and friend. The abandoned possessions of the attackers are a faded memory.

Magic Man and Zozo know now that their magic doesn't always work here. They are good beings, understanding that nature consumes whatever invades her.

One-Who-Asks-Many-Questions was sad to depart, but I feel it was necessary. The lack of her people's mineral magic disturbed and angered her greatly.

Should these friends contact us, in person or by mineral magic, I will invite them here once more.

The Next Galaxy
(Iron Falcon crew POV; post-"Birds of a Feather")

"Report, Gunner!"

"Cap'n Kidd, as per your orders, we are now entering the Andromeda Galaxy. Surely THIS will be far enough to escape everyone in the Milky Way!"

"Cawww, we'll see."

"Only life around here's us, hawk-nose," Bubblehead snickered.

"Bawk! Pipe down, you miserable excuse for a memory bird!"

"Heavily-armed ships approaching on all sides, Cap'n. They're hailing us; shall we respond?"

"Give me a visual first."

At the sight of a thousand cyclops-eyed starships surrounding the Iron Falcon, Squeegie squealed in panic, hiding behind Kidd's shoulder.

"Kraaaaaaah, this is the GENERAL'S home galaxy?! Reverse course for our own galaxy NOW, Gunner, at top warp!"

"Coordinates set!"

"ENGAGE!"

Inner Potential
(Niko POV)

When I first came to Earth, I couldn't believe the fear that followed me around. Then and now, I strive to show that it is the intention -- not any "special powers" -- that truly counts.

The others are kindred spirits. Zachary is uncomfortable with his bionics, yet wields them with great control. Doc is the most at-ease, having designed his computer-friendly Tweakers himself. Goose relies on his skill, using biodefenses only when necessary. When we join forces -- through teamwork, trust, and merging our implant energies -- there is little we cannot accomplish.

Though our actions, I hope the fear dies.

Supertrooper Blues
(Goose POV, post-Wolfden)

You never turn on your buddies. Even if they treat you like crap or go insane, you watch their backs.

Supertroopers, the first line of defense against aliens... hah. We were nothing but expendable soldiers, test-tube subjects raised to fight and kill on command.

Now the grand experiment's shot to blazes. Except for me, the others are outlaws or in cryo. To stay free, I have to hunt down those I once called comrades.

After them, who's next on the hit list? Makes me wonder who the real aliens are here, and I ain't talking about Kiwi or Andorians.

Old Dogs, Old Tricks
(post-"Wildfire," with thanks to MissEgon)

"Figures Wildfire's clunker breaks down during our patrol," Doc groaned.

"Why WAS he booted out?" Goose asked.

"He hit on the female cadets," Zach winced.

"Where's Niko?"

"Making sure he doesn't high-tail it," Doc revealed.

"I'll make the rounds," Zach nodded.

"Me too," Goose growled, looking irate.

They found Wildfire KO'ed in the launch bay.

"What happened, Niko?"

"He got fresh, Captain."

"Fresh enough to cause this?"

"As a matter of fact, YES."

Zach briefly paused. "All right, but YOU explain it to the Commander."

"You could've saved a bit for me, Niko."

"Sorry, Shane. Next time, I promise."

Whatever It Takes
(occurs near the end of "Phoenix,"
with a brief nod to The Six Million Dollar Man TV series)

"What's the verdict, Doctor... Q-Ball, is it?"

"I'm sorry, Captain Foxx, but saving your left arm and leg isn't possible."

"Then I can't return to active duty."

"There is one way... that's where the bionic replacement parts come in."

"Bionics?! You want to turn me into a MACHINE?!"

"Captain, Earth technology has had fully functional bionics since the 1970s, and we've made quantum leaps since then. It'll take only a week of therapy for you to become proficient enough to return to active duty."

Eliza's face flashed across Zach's mind, steeling and strengthening his resolve to rescue her.

"Do it."

Contract Obligations
(post-"Battle of the Bandits")

"Oh no. Nay, nince, nein, no, and did I mention no?"

"Aw c'mon, Doc, it'll be fun."

"Niko, fun is painting the town white with a beautiful lady. Fun is escaping Crown Troopers with my charming hide intact. This is NOT fun."

"But the record company's demanding we fulfill the contract we won."

"EX-cuse me? Since when do we have to honor that?!"

"Since that single we played at the Battle of the Bands hit number one."

"Zachary and Gooseman actually agreed to this?"

"Reluctantly."

"All right, all right, I'll do it."

"Thanks, Doc. See you at the recording studio!"
