Gillian Questions

How does Gillian fit through doors with that giant hat of his?

Very carefully. Luckily, many of the doors in the series are very tall.

How can Gillian be a thousand years old?

Gillian looks human, but you never know. He may be partially related to a long-lived race such as elves. Gillian may also have achieved his longevity through magic.

Isn't Gillian a woman's name? What is the name supposed to mean?

The woman's name you are thinking of is Jillian. Gillian is the male form of this name, just as Aaron is the male form of the female name Erin. The name Gillian is related to St. John of the Christian religion. In the early Christian era, followers of St. John were quite mystical in orientation and often experimented with magic, fortune-telling, and other supernatural phenomena.

Why doesn't Gillian use his magic to stop the Monster Minds once and for all?

Gillian is powerful, but the use of his magics often drains him. A spell of that magnitude would probably kill him. He might not even be able to garner the energy needed to pull off such a powerful spell in the first place.

What kind of wizard is Gillian?

The particular style of magic Gillian uses is never named in the series. It seems clear, however, that Gillian is an "eclectic" magician, meaning that he practices magics of all types and origins. In addition, Gillian has a tendency to add scientific elements to his spells. This makes him truly unique.

Does Gillian use magic to do his scientific work, or is he a real scientist?

Gillian's knowledge of mechanics and science appears to be unrelated to his knowledge of magic, though he does occasionally blend the two in order to produce special results. It is probable that Gillian simply has a love of science in addition to his love of magic, and studied it on the side as he learned to be a wizard.
