Oon Questions

If Oon's lance is magic, why doesn't it ever do anything magical?

Because it really has no inherent magic. Oon's lance has saved him from so many scrapes that he believes it really has magic powers, but in fact it is just a metal spear.

Why does Oon carry his magic lance everywhere?

The lance is the weapon of an Eternal Squire, and identifies Oon as such. It's an important part of his identity. It's also rather like his security blanket, giving him a sense of protection and comfort. This is why he huddles close to it whenever he is scared. It might as well be called his Binky as his magic lance!

What does the name Oon mean?

Oon is the male derivative of the female name Una, meaning singular or unique. Oon is also the Dutch word for "clownish," "clumsy," and "silly."

Why does Oon dislike Brock and the Zoggies?

Oon considers them pests who get in his way. As a warrior and Eternal Squire, he thinks he doesn't have time to play.

Why does Oon sound different in various episodes?

At least two different voice actors played Oon in the series. Either that, or the sound technicians developed a new way to achieve his tinny voice effects halfway through the series. Brock's voice changes at the same time Oon's does.

Why is Oon such a coward?

Oon has served various masters for over two thousand years. After being in so many battles, he has become a bit gun shy. It is possible that he wonders when his time will run out. Even Eternal Squires have to die sometime. (Lizzard's Note: I tell you, being eternal just isn't what it used to be.)

Is Oon mechanical or magical?

The debate has raged, and the pro-magic theorists have won hands down. Though Oon is made of metal, he is entirely hollow and requires no robotics to move. He was brought to life through magic, and it is magic that sustains him. Thus, when Oon begins to break down in Children of Solarus II, he has to be healed by the winds rather than repaired by the mechanical wizard Gillian. (Lizzard's Note: That pun was intended.) In addition, his reliance on magic as opposed to robotics is evidenced by his ability to take himself apart with nary a problem.

Are there any female Eternal Squires?

Yes, there are female Eternal Squires. For instance, there is Leese, from the episode Soultree. Oon and Leese are quite attached to one another. Leese even kissed Oon! However, it should be noted that these are magical creatures, not real flesh and blood. There will never be any "Squire Babies" for Brock and the Zoggies to torture.

If Oon dismembered himself and left a part behind, would it stay alive forever independent of his body?

Presumably Oon's parts can survive indefinitely away from his body. It has not yet been determined if distance would affect his control over the part, however. If it were left behind while Oon traveled galaxies and galaxies away, his ties to it would probably be irreparably severed. The part would still be alive, technically, but he would no longer have any control over it. Since the part couldn't think on its own, it would never move, and thus it might as well be dead.
