Flora

Occupation:   Flower-Child

Known Relatives:

    Audric (creator/adopted father)
    Gillian (creator)
    Jayce (adopted brother)

Equipment:

  • Book of Legends: A huge tome given to Flora by Gillian. She uses this to learn about Swampwitch in the episode of the same name. She keeps it in her room on the Pride.

  • Communicator: This is a small hand-held device that she uses to keep in contact with the others in Circus Planet.

  • Transmitter: Gillian gives this to Flora in Space Thief to help her hone in on the Root. It focuses her senses more sharply, and transmits her sense patterns to Drill Sergeant's computer so that the others can see where the Root is hidden. It looks like a smooth, faceted, translucent, purple-grey gemstone with a small machine inside, and is worn on a necklace strap. It was destroyed when it is used as bait for Kleptos, but Gillian can presumably make more.

Special Abilities:

  • Animal and Plant Calling: She can mentally summon animals and plants to come to her aid.

  • Animal and Plant Communication: Flora can understand and speak to all animals and plants. She has used this skill to ask questions, relay information, and request their help.

  • Empathy: She can sense emotions and other sensations in plants, animals, and people. Flora often uses this gift to determine someone's emotional state and sometimes to determine if the being in question is telling the truth. She uses the power in Escape From the Garden to sense Oon's approach. She also uses it in other episodes to sense Aragon's pain and hate, General Ghest's confusion, Kumari's deception, and Gash's discomfort.

  • Sense Danger: Flora has a "sixth sense" that can warn her of general danger. This power is strongest in the later episodes.

  • Sense Magic: She can sense strong magic and mystical artifacts. In the Liberty Stone mini-series, this power allows her to feel Vantu's presence and detect a spell approaching the Lightning League.

  • Sense Monster Minds: Flora can sense whether or not the Monster Minds are nearby. She can scan a planet's surface to detect them, as well as sense when they are approaching the Lightning League's immediate area.

  • Telepathy: She can mentally communicate with other people. Flora uses this skill to distract Vantu by "calling out" to him in the fourth episode of the Liberty Stone mini-series. Her telepathy seems to grow stronger as the series progresses, and is especially powerful when she is in magic-rich places.

  • Tracking: Flora can locate anyone to whom she is emotionally close and can also "hone in" on strong biological or magical energy sources. She tracks Brock, Gillian, Jayce, and Oon at different times in the series. In various episodes, she has used her tracking power to locate the organic planetary computer Logos, plot a course to the planet Tika by sensing its powerful Orkim plants, and "see" the location of Vantu's magic-draining pyramid.

  • Other Powers: She displays the following minor abilities at least once in the series...

      * Feels that someone is watching her and the Lightning League.

      * Finds the right work tool through mental concentration.

      * Hides Brock and herself from the Monster Minds by mentally projecting an illusion of tall plants over their location.

      * Mentally compels plants to grow, move, ensnare people, and lift enormous doors.

      * Shares her strength with the Root and Swampwitch on separate occasions. At one point, Swampwitch uses Flora as a conduit for her power, drawing on the latter's strength to perform her magic.

      * Uses a small part of Gillian's magic for as long as she touches him.

      * Uses telekinesis.

(Lizzard's Note: A general rule of thumb is this -- if you can imagine it, Flora can do it. She's going to serve some serious buckets of whoop-ass when she grows up!)

Personal Pets:

  • Brock: A large flying fish created by Audric and Gillian. Brock is Flora's friend, pet, and primary mode of transportation. He can fly, glide, hover, swim, and breathe both air and water. He can track Flora no matter where she is. Flora has taught him to work with the Zoggies in order to operate Battle Base. Brock is vulnerable to heat. He was injured by the Monster Minds in Gateworld, so we know he's not made of rock. However, he apparently has some immunity from cold and radiation (as seen in Fire and Ice and Hook, Line, and Sinker, respectively). Brock can pick up small objects with the tips of his wings. Brock's body is pink and he has a dark blue head, blue eyes, white lips, white back fins, white tail flukes, and big blue, pink, and white striped wings. He makes squeaking, chirping, and whistling sounds to communicate.

  • The Zoggies: These three pets are little robotic dogs. They are equipped with small oil guns and lightning guns, and can give off electric shocks. They run and jump all over the place like little bundles of Mexican jumping beans. Flora has taught them to work with Brock in order to operate Battle Base. Flora can also program the Zoggies to home in on electronic devices, such as Jayce's communicator. Their colors are yellow-and-blue, light blue-and-yellow, and orange-and-yellow, depending on the individual Zoggie. They make electronic barking noises to communicate.

Appearance:

Flora looks like a human child who is between seven to ten years old. She has long thin arms and legs, large green eyes, and bright red hair worn in two thick ponytails on top and a long thin one down her back. She wears a light pink shirt, dark pink vest, dark green mini-skirt with two to three big tan tassels (possibly Scottish sporrans), blue shoes, and small green bracelets on both wrists. When using her powers, she usually glows with a gold light. Others can tell at a glance that she is a gifted girl who is open and curious.

Strengths:

Because Flora was born of a flower, she has a number of nature-related powers. Flora can drive the Lightning League vehicles very well, and is getting experience in piloting the Pride. She must have some immunity from cold weather, or else she could never have shoveled snow for nine hours in a short skirt as she does in the episode Fire & Ice. Flora has knowledge of herbal remedies, and uses this knowledge to make a liquid to help Herc fight his cold in Doomflower. Flora is very sensitive and friendly towards animals, plants, and people, and will always try to help those in need. She is brave, helpful, innocent, inquisitive, and a good judge of character. She tends to see most new things with a childlike sense of wonder.

Weaknesses:

Since Flora is a plant, she is vulnerable to defoliants, pesticides, and anything else that harms vegetation. She can also be hurt by magic because of her extreme sensitivity to it. She is impetuous and stubborn sometimes, going against orders if she feels that she should. She tends to fight with Oon over how he treats Brock and the Zoggies. Whenever Flora experiences strong emotions, her senses become temporarily blocked. Flora has some minor allergies caused by the fact that some plants do not mix well with other plants. Her allergies usually manifest themselves as a shortness of breath.

History:

Flora is a flower, probably an orchid, who was transformed into a young girl by Audric and Gillian in one of their experiments.

In Escape From the Garden, she waited along with Brock, Gillian, Jayce, and the Zoggies for Audric to show up. Oon came instead. Soon afterwards, they fought their first battle against the Monster Minds, in which Flora helped save Jayce and Oon by driving Drill Sergeant.

In The Sleeping Princess, she aided Princess Kiandra convince the Tree of Life to live again. She fought back against the Life-Eater's nightmare by forgiving Jayce after he supposedly destroyed all plant life in the universe. When Jayce and Oon were kidnapped by Orion the Hunter in The Hunt, Flora agreed to be turned back into a plant by Gillian so that her sensitivity to the Root could be increased a thousandfold and thus be used to track them down. At the end of the episode, she became human again through a sacrifice made by Orion. In another episode, on the planet Marg, Flora met Swampwitch, a powerful nature spirit with great magical powers over plants. They spent some time together, and Swampwitch invited Flora to come with her after deciding to leave Marg in flight from the Monster Minds. Flora chose to stay with the Lightning League, but she still missed Swampwitch a great deal. In the Liberty Stone mini-series, the evil sorcerer Vantu used his magic to affect Flora, making her sick and robbing her of her powers. She was eventually cured through the magic of Warp's Orb. In The Great Gardener, Flora nearly died when she activated Farrow's plant-destroying machine; his life-inducing mist revived her. In Gateworld, Flora and Brock were accidentally left behind when the Lightning League used a magic gateway to travel to another location, but Jayce saved them, reuniting the pair with the others.

Flora has always seen Jayce as a brother and loves him as such, even though she has occasionally voiced a wish that he would not be so protective of her. She considers Audric her father, missing him just as much as Jayce. Gillian is both grandfather and father to Flora, and she spends much of her free time with him, being his assistant and listening to his tales. She has had a more adversarial relationship with Oon because of his fights with her pets. Flora's friendship with Herc Stormsailor grows throughout the series, having its rough points along the way, but becoming strong in the end.

Flora continues to have adventures with the Lightning League.
