Equipment:

• Communicator: This is a small hand-held piece of equipment he uses to contact Jayce in the episodes Swampwitch and Circus Planet. He carries it in the middle of his robes, above the left side of his chest.

• Magical Items: Gillian carries a few mystical objects within his robes, usually in the upper sleeves. Such items include a small magic mirror, which he uses to make the wizard Perawon fall into a truth-inducing trance in The Sleeping Princess, and a magical medallion. Gillian also has several spellbooks that he can materialize out of thin air. Most of these are alphabetized by spell type.

• Magical/Scientific Laboratory: He has his own laboratory in his cabin aboard the Pride. It is stocked with objects, raw materials, and mystical substances that can be used to create various magical and scientific effects. The room contains a large table that is partially covered with interconnected beakers and flasks and the walls have charts on them. It is here that Gillian creates plant-growing and plant-weakening potions in Space Thief.

• Magic Crystal: Gillian uses this to find Jayce and Oon after they disappear in Children of Solarus II. It shows him the shadowy images of his friends. The crystal looks like a faceted, sparkling, blue gem that rests on a small brown table.

• Magic Staff: Gillian usually carries around a mystical staff. He uses it to "aim" his magic towards something as though it were a large wand. The staff automatically detects magic -- the top part glows with a gold or pink light that pulses faster and faster the closer Gillian gets to the source of the magic. The staff is jet-black with a golden line spiraling up the top half. It is capped with a large flat black oval. Gillian sometimes lends his staff to others in order for them to be able to detect magic, but he is the only one able to direct magic with it.

• Small Hand-Held Telescope: He uses this to help him determine when the Monster Minds will make planetfall in The Silver Crusaders. He carries it in his sleeves.

Special Abilities:

• Magical Powers: Gillian can cast a wide variety of magics. His mystical powers come from within himself. He does not need an outside source of energy to perform magic. However, on occasion a spell requires an outside component in order to maintain strength, such as the sunlight that powers his Wall of Light in Escape From the Garden. Gillian has used alterations, elementalism, enchantments, incantations, sorcery, and spells. These magics are called upon to perform the following feats throughout the course of the series...
  

  * Altering the scanner to search for Gateworld.
  

  * Boosting energy levels in the Pride's engines.
  

  * Canceling and/or repelling other magics.
  

  * Casting illusions over areas, people, and the Pride.
  

  * Causing a rockslide to fall.
  

  * Changing the bodies of himself and the other "organic" League members into several forms that can survive on a high-gravity planet.

  * Converting lead into gold and vice versa.
  

  * Converting matter from one form into another.
  

  * Creating life-support "bubbles" that allow people to survive in hostile environments.
  

  * Creating walls of light that stop evil forces & allow good ones to enter.

  * Magically inputting his knowledge of Audric into a computer so that it can find the planet he is most likely to be on.

  He accesses his magical energies through chanting, concentration, reading spells from books, or using other objects, such as his magic staff, to focus his powers. Gillian's magic is usually accompanied by light and/or sparkles coming from his hands and arms, and sometimes light radiates from an aura surrounding his body.

• Magic Sense: Gillian has developed the ability to sense the location of magical items. He can also tell if a person is a wizard merely by being in his/her presence. This gift is a natural form of sixth sense and is not the result of a spell.

Appearance:

Gillian is a human male who appears to be his seventies to early eighties. He has blue eyes, short grey hair, long grey sideburns & grey beard, slightly pointed ears, and an average build. Gillian's face has prominent cheekbones and a few lines, mostly on his forehead and under his eyes. He dresses in loose robes that reach to the ground and have huge roomy sleeves. These robes are purple with vertical red streaks on the chest and back, gold lines between purple and red, and light violet accents. There is also a red skirt he wears over the robes, which has a gold crescent resting near the bottom, its points tipping upward. Gillian sports a large purple-and-violet T-shaped wizard's hat, small gold spectacles on his nose, and red slippers. He is dignified, kind, and knowledgable.

Strengths:

Gillian is an expert wizard who can perform seemingly impossible magics on a regular basis. He is also a master mechanic -- he created the Lightning League vehicles and does regular maintenance, modifications, and repairs on them plus the Pride. He can fix just about anything mechanical and improve it in the process. (Lizzard's Note: Good lord, he's a geriatric MacGyver!) In addition, Gillian has chemical, medical, and scientific skills. He can pilot the Pride of the Skies II with ease. Due to his long life and extensive experience, he is a virtual walking encyclopedia. He seems to know everything, especially about legends, magic, and mythology. He also knows a great deal about science, mathematics, and technology. Gillian has some knowledge of Ashrar magic from studying the Purple Tome at the Hebron Library. Gillian's long friendship with Audric has allowed him to be more knowledgeable about the man than anyone, even Jayce. Gillian is compassionate, forgiving, patient, and wise. When push comes to shove, he will defend his friends with all the power at his command.

Weaknesses:

If Gillian performs magics that use a great deal of energy, he becomes tired and must rest for a bit. Magic-draining attacks weaken him. If he is in a place where all magical powers are suspended, such as inside a gateway, he cannot use his gifts. When Dr. Zorg planted a Psych-Inhibitor in Gillian's brain, he was unable to use his magic until it was removed. He is sometimes overprotective of Flora.

History:

Gillian is a thousand-year-old expert wizard and mechanic.

Several things are known about his past. He went fishing as a boy at the Gardollan River on the planet Dellodron, visited a Gateworld when he was two hundred, saw a portal to a negative universe 732 years ago, heard tales of the original Lightning League when he was five hundred, practically raised Audric, helped Audric transform Flora from an orchid into a human, and lived in his idyllic garden before the Monster Minds came.

In Escape From the Garden, Gillian was working on the Lightning League vehicles and waiting with Flora and Jayce for Audric. Oon arrived in his place, revealing how the Monster Minds were created. Gillian gave Jayce the Ring of Light and the Lightning League vehicles to help fight the battles ahead. He magically forced the Pride to land in his garden and negotiated with Herc for safe passage. After the first conflict with the Monster Minds, Gillian escaped on the Pride with the rest of the group.

Gillian joined the Lightning League and their quest to find Audric. On the Light-Eater's world, he confronted his fear of being a powerless old man without magic by finding the mystical power within himself. When he went to the magicians' planet in Moon Magic, he pooled his magics along with the magics of other powerful wizards in the Orb so that the energy of the Nightmoon could strengthen him and give him new magical essence. During the Liberty Stone mini-series, the evil sorcerer Vantu tried to weaken Gillian and destroy the Lightning League but was defeated. In Deadly Reflections, Gillian created an impenetrable shield around the planet Eldor using machinery powered by the planet's unique magnetic field.

Gillian continues to have adventures with the Lightning League.
