Oon

Occupation:   Eternal Squire

Known Relatives:

    Squiresmith Wixland (creator)
    The Council of Twelve
Leese and Other Eternal Squires (fellow creations)

Equipment:

  • Communicator: This is a small hand-held device that Oon uses to warn Jayce of the Monster Minds' approach in Lifeship.

  • Magic Lance: A weapon that can be used as a lance, spear, shield, and sword against both physical and magical attacks. Ironically, the "magic" lance has no actual magical powers of its own. If it is held at a right angle, it can reflect an energy attack back to its source, but it cannot generate its own energy. Oon can use the lance to vault himself over great distances. The lance has a dark grey handle, while the shaft is decorated with spiraling white and pink bands.

Oon loses his lance twice, once in The Chimes of Sharpis and once in The Hunt, but somehow he gets it back both times while off-screen. Herc accidentally breaks Oon's lance in Moon Magic, but he repairs it for the Eternal Squire and assures him that it has just as much magic as it had before.

  • Mounted Camera: In one episode, Gillian attaches a small video camera to Oon's head in order to have him sneak into a building and get an "inside look" at Kumari's force field generator. Oon complains that the camera is heavy and gives him a headache. It is never used again.

Special Abilities:

  • Anatomical Separation: Oon can divide himself into individual pieces of armor and put himself back together again by clicking and/or twisting the parts back into place. He does not feel any pain while doing this. He can still think, talk, and move the fingers on his gauntlets while he is dismembered. Oon can even "give away" pieces of his armor, as long as they are eventually replaced. For example, this occurs in Space Thief, when he donates one of his shoulder plates to provide zircumite for a plant-growing potion and another to provide bait for Kleptos.

The main drawback of Oon's separational ability is that it makes him rather prone to come apart when he falls or is hit. He also feels the pain caused by damage to any of his individual parts, even when they are not attached to his body. Last but not least, the ease with which his component pieces can be detached has led to the "burglary" of some of his body parts! This occurs in Chimes of Sharpis, as well as in Space Thief.

  • Attuned Senses: Oon's senses are linked to those of his master, currently Jayce. This allows him to detect when someone or something is trying to mentally dominate Jayce, as in Steel Against Shadow. When the spirit inside the Helmet of Valroth tries to possess Jayce, Oon sees a hideous, dark grey, humanoid face superimposed over his master's. The ability also causes Oon to have "an awful feeling" about the evil Audric clone in Deadly Reunion.

  • High-Gravity Immunity: Oon can move about normally on high-gravity worlds, suffering no damage from the effects of heavy air pressure.

  • Inner Storage: Oon's armor is hollow, and he can store objects in its empty spaces. For instance, he stores Warp's Orb in his torso in the third episode of the Liberty Stone mini-series. He also hides a rare flowering plant from the planet Eldor in his left leg and torso in Deadly Reflections.

Appearance:

Oon is a small suit of living zircumite armor. He has black eyes with no visible pupils or irises. His eyes, though metal, have the mysterious ability to change shape according to his mood. Oon wears a pink feather plume on the top of his head. His shoulder plates, upper face plate, and elbow and knee guards are rust brown in color. His belt, gauntlets, and two stripes on his feet are dark red. Oon's torso, which looks like a tunic, is orange. The rest of his legs, arms, and head are grey with a few dark grey stripes. He usually carries his magic lance with him everywhere he goes. Oon wears an open, naive expression most of the time, which can instantly change to being bashful, happy, irritated, terrified, or uncertain as circumstances permit.

Strengths:

Oon has more courage than he thinks. No matter how scared he is, he always manages to come through when needed. He takes his duties as an Eternal Squire very seriously, and can use his magic lance quite effectively in battle. He can fight with the Lightning League vehicles very well. Oon is completely loyal to his master Jayce and will do anything for him. He genuinely cares for the other Lightning League members as well. Every day, Oon belies his self-professed cowardice by risking his life for his friends.

Weaknesses:

Oon often behaves in an openly yellow-bellied manner. He is afraid of just about anything that seems dangerous, especially battle, yet he always manages to perform as needed despite his fright. Oon's body is vulnerable to magnetism, rusting, and wearing out. Oon is also a bit sensitive, and will either argue or give the silent treatment to anyone who irks him, especially Herc and Flora. Oon does not get along with Brock or the Zoggies, and snipes at them constantly. Unfortunately for Oon, they seem to enjoy these little battles and persist in irritating him.

History:

Oon is a two-thousand-year-old living suit of armor who was created by Squiresmith Wixland to be an Eternal Squire. Eternal Squires serve only people of good intent. Thus, only the truest and most honest people in the universe have Eternal Squires. Oon's two most recent masters are Audric and Jayce.

He was with Audric during the experiment that created the Monster Minds, and led his master to safety before they could be captured. Audric created the Root to stop the Monster Minds, but was interrupted before he could graft the halves together. He gave one half to Oon and told him to go to Jayce, tell him what happened, and serve him as his new master. Audric then fled with the other half of the Root.

Oon found Jayce in Escape From the Garden and did as he was instructed. He joined the Lightning League and has been on their quest ever since.

In The Silver Crusaders, he became the leader of a group of warriors and took them into battle against the Monster Minds. Later, Oon was summoned before Squiresmith Wixland to explain his constant cowardice. He ended up impressing his creator and aiding the Lightning League by riding Heartfire, an ancient dragon, into battle against the Monster Minds. On the Light-Eater's world, Oon confronted his greatest fear, that of appearing before the Council of Twelve to answer the charge of being a coward. He defeated it by admitting that maybe he was a coward, but his duty was to serve his master, "now and forever." In Children of Solarus II, Oon's worn-out old armor was restored by the planet's healing winds.

Oon continues to have adventures with the Lightning League.
