Doomflower
Written by Barbara Hambly
The Lightning League spotted a fleet of Monster Mind slave ships on course for the Black Nebula. From one of Herc's contacts in the slave trade, they learned that the Monster Minds are up to something big -- and that Audric was one of their slaves!
Jayce, Oon, and Armed Force went undercover on one of the enemy slave ships in order to find out the truth. The ship docked at Doomflower Station. Jayce and Oon nosed around and manage to locate Audric's hidden Root. Not realizing that Jayce is Audric's son, a slave stole the amulet from him, dashing off to return it to its proper owner. When Jayce pursued, he was knocked unconscious by other slaves. The group almost spaced him, but Oon convinced them not to by revealing Jayce's identity. (Lizzard's Note: Apparently "to space" is slave slang for exposing someone to the vacuum of space. What's next -- Slavebonics?) A friendly slave named Krato tried to help Jayce reach Audric, but they arrived too late: the stolen ship had already departed.
Krato explained that the Monster Minds built Doomflower Station in order to access the Black Nebula's portal to another universe. They intended to use the other universe as a breeding ground for millions of troopers. Oon, Jayce, and Krato were pursued by Monster Mind troopers, but they escaped by spacing the enemy vehicles.
Jayce contacted the rest of the League and told them his plan. He wanted to use the red magnetic vines left behind by Audric to immobilize the Monster Mind troopers. Jayce and the slaves sabotaged Doomflower Station's security system, allowing the Pride could slip in. Herc, Flora, and Spike Trike left the barge to join Jayce and his new allies.
Flora spoke to the magnetic vines while Herc, Jayce, and Krato prepared them to absorb a great deal of power. Gillian invented a special golden dust, dumping it on the station's solar petals. This overloaded the central computer and fed so much energy into the magnetic vines that they grew exponentially, raging out of control. The League retreated through the station as the red vines filled the hallways, stopping the Monster Minds dead in their tracks.
The League returned to the Pride and escaped the station. When solar petals of Doomflower Station were closed, the reduction in energy calmed the magnetic vines. The Monster Mind presence at the station had been eliminated!
Some of the former slaves, including Krato, decided to guard the Black Nebula from the Monster Minds by converting Doomflower Station into a rebel outpost. The Lightning League wished them well before departing.
