Light-Eater

The Light-Eater was an alien who fed on the light of captured people's souls. (Lizzard's Note: Hmmmm... like the IRS!) He did so by confronting them with their worst fears. This usually caused them to betray their friends, thus placing their spirits under his permanent control. Saw Boss bid him eat the souls of the Lightning League members.

Light-Eater duplicated the frequency of Audric's life-force, then broadcasted it at double strength, causing Jayce's Root to react strongly. The League tracked the signal to his planet. Once they were on his turf, the Light-Eater trapped them and began their nightmares.

Flora was in a place where all the universe's plants were dying of a disease that Jayce created to destroy the Monster Minds. It infected her too. She could save the remaining plants if she betrayed Jayce and allied with Saw Boss.

Oon was called before the Council of Twelve, the first of the Eternal Squires, who charged him with being a coward. Amidst a storm of accusations, he apologized and offered to make it up to them. He was offered the option to be retrained if he left Jayce.

Gillian lost his magic powers. Two wizards, who openly mocked him as a "useless old man," offered to help restore them. The price for getting them back was abandoning the others.

Herc woke up as an old man next to a damaged Pride. To add to his shock, he was approached by a buyer and his toady, who offered him a fortune in gemstones for his "rustbucket." The fine print for the sale of his ship was to deny that the League members were his friends.

Jayce was confronted by Audric, who told him that the Monster Minds had destroyed his Root, thus winning the war. He declared that their loss is Jayce's fault, and tried to force him to admit his failure. Jayce realized that this harsh, bitter, defeated man couldn't possibly be his beloved Audric. After sharply denouncing the imposter, Jayce called upon the Ring of Light, which helped him break out of his nightmare.

One by one, the others conquered their fears as well. Gillian found his magic within himself. Herc refused the offer and retained his pride. (Lizzard's Note: Oh, wasn't that pun just the greatest?) Oon told the Council of Twelve that maybe he was a coward, but his place was still at Jayce's side. Flora forgave Jayce for his actions instead of joining Saw Boss. The victorious League reunited and, after fighting off invading Monster Mind troopers, escaped the Light-Eater's planet.
