"Space Thief"

Saw Boss ordered the Monster Minds to take over Vaykon, an unpopulated planet rich in minerals and water.

At the same time, Gillian discovered that Vaykon would collide with another planet, Zoloft II, in forty-eight hours. The second world possessed a large population, so the League set out to prevent this catastrophe. Jayce asked Gillian to invent something that could make Monster Minds grow incredibly fast -- if this happened, their combined weight would send Vaykon spinning off course and shatter the planet.

When his research was complete, Gillian found that zircumite was needed to finish the potion; without this ingredient, the mixture weakened plants instead of speeding their growth. Oon donated a piece of zircumite from his left shoulder plate to complete the plant-growing potion.

After the Pride touched down on Vaykon, Jayce asked Flora to stay on board, since there was no telling what effect the potion might have on her. The others ventured out to spray the Monster Mind vines. When some grit blocked up Jayce's gun during a test run, he stopped to use Oon's lance to unclog it. A Kleptos monkey appeared on the scene in its small yellow spaceship, taking cover behind a nearby plant. Gillian noted that he had not seen one in centuries and the playful creature had an instinctive ability to steal objects that caught his fancy. Kleptos observed them for a few seconds before swooping down and making off with Oon's plume. (Lizzard's Note: At this point, with his shoulder plate temporarily replaced with a piece of plastic, his plume stolen and replaced with a piece of fern, and his lance covered in plant-growing gak, Oon looks really darn funny!) The League drove on to avoid approaching enemy troopers, continuing to spray the vines with the potion. Flora occupied herself by caring for the native plant targeted during the test run. Taking it into Herc's quarters so that her other plants wouldn't be touched by the growth potion, she managed to wash most it off. As planned, the affected vines grew out of control, starting to break the land apart.

When Saw Boss attempted to teleport there to deal with the problem, Jayce was ready with another plan: he sprayed one of the receptacles with the plant-weakening potion, thereby stranding the Monster Minds' headquarters on Vaykon. Two troopers pursued Jayce and Oon, but an earthquake crumbled the stone bridge they were passing over, pitching them all into a chasm. Jayce shot out a line from his belt-buckle that looped around a rock outcropping, catching both him in midair as he grabbed on Oon. He told the Squire to ride piggyback and started climbing to safety. At the worst possible moment, Kleptos stole the Root, then tunneled underground to add it to his "treasure trove."

Jayce alerted the others to this new turn of events, feeling that they must get the Root back in case Saw Boss escaped from Vaykon. The League chased after Kleptos, but the giant vines' roots were too tough for Drill Sergeant to tunnel through. Jayce asked Flora to leave the barge to help track down the Root. After Gillian gave her a special transmitter that focused her senses more sharply, she pinpointed the Root's exact location -- right beneath Saw Boss' headquarters. Thanks to Oon sacrificing his intact shoulder-plate to trick Kleptos into taking the growth-potion underground, the League used it to repair the damaged receptacle, allowing the building and its occupants to teleport away.

This left a gaping hole in the ground that permitted access to Kleptos' secret stash. The League hurried back to the Pride and flew it straight to Kleptos' hideout. Jayce journeyed into the chasm and asked the Ring of Light to help him locate the Root. The Ring caught the Root in a tractor beam, floating it straight up to him. Jayce grabbed the Root and raced into the barge.

Both the Pride and Kleptos' spaceship escaped just before Vaykon exploded. Herc found a different sort of explosion in his cabin; the native plant had completely taken over thanks to the remnants of Gillian's growth potion.

Memorable Quotes

Terror Tank: "Heh, there are endless reserves of water and minerals here, Excellency! And no population to hinder us!"
Saw Boss: "Excellent! Take the planet!"

Gillian: "In forty-eight hours, the planet we're now passing, Vaykon, is going to collide with Zoloft II -- which has a large population!"

Jayce: "Gillian, is there any way to make Monster Minds grow incredibly fast?"
Gillian: "Possibly. Ah, what do you have in mind, my boy?"
Jayce: "A way to save Zoloft II, and destroy the Monster Minds on Vaykon at the same time."

Gillian: "I need a smidgen of the metal zircumite, and it's done! Oh dear, I ran out of it just last month."

Gillian: "Well, of course! It's used in armor, Oon -- you're made of zircumite!"
Oon: "No, Master -- you wouldn't...!"
Jayce: "Couldn't you donate one little piece, Oon, to save a whole planet?"
Oon: "Oh, g-g-go ahead, but be careful!"

Oon: "Oh Master, how can I be brave and noble when part of me is PLASTIC?!"

Herc: "Okay, let's get it over with! Feeding vitamins to Monster Minds! Huh, I must be out of my mind!"

Oon: "My plume! Give me back my plume!"
Gillian: "I'm afraid that's what a Kleptos does, Oon. He steals objects that catch his fancy; it's instinctive."
Oon: "But my PLUME! It's part of my uniform!"

Flora: "*Gasp!* Oh no! There's a plant out there, Brock -- it's hurting!"

Flora: "Yes, I know -- you're growing much too fast! Some spray must have gotten on you."

Flora: "Here we are, Herc's cabin -- it's the only place without plants. I know you'll be lonely, but you have to be by yourself until I make you well."

Jayce: "Okay, we lost them. Pull up here."
Herc: "What for? We gotta get back to the ship, kid; the planet's gonna disintegrate!"
Jayce: "And when it does, I want Saw Boss trapped here!"

Saw Boss: "What is this? Why would that boy want to make my vines grow larger?"
Terror Tank: "I don't know, Excellency, but he risked destruction to spray a green mist!"

Jayce: "Armed Force, maintain Battle Plan B."
Armed Force: "Command acknowledged, Battle Plan B!"

Jayce: "Move around and ride piggyback, Oon; I'll need both hands for climbing."
Oon: "Y-Y-Yes, M-M-M-Master J-J-J-Jayce!"

Jayce: "NO! Not the Root! COME BACK!"

Saw Boss: "I can't see anything! There is interference with the Powers of the Black Light!"

Jayce: "Why, he thinks it's a game! AFTER HIM!"

Jayce: "We don't have much time, Flora -- we need you to pinpoint the exact location of the Root."
Flora: "I'll do it, Jayce! I can do it, Jayce!"

Herc (growling at Kleptos): "If I get my hands on you...!"

Drill Sergeant's Computer: "Root is buried in Sector 30.97, underneath Saw Boss headquarters."
Oon: "Ohhh Master, we'll never get it back!"
Herc: "So what? When the planet shakes apart, it's bye-bye Saw Boss anyway!"
Jayce: "He may survive, Herc; we have to get the Root! Even if it means letting Saw Boss go."

Jayce: "Okay, the potion's set to go! Now it's up to Kleptos -- but I wish we had something even shinier to attract him!"
Oon: "Oh Master, you will repair me, won't you? Oh!"
(The Squire donates his intact shoulder-plate)
Jayce: "With the finest-quality zircumite and a beautiful new plume!"

Herc: "All right, Kleptos, you got us into this mess, now get us out!"

Saw Boss: "WE'RE FREE! Powers of the Black Light, REMOVE ME FROM HERE!"

Flora: "Wait, Herc! I have to tell you something."
Herc: "Ohhh, later, Pea-Pod. I just wanna get into my cabin and sleep for three weeks! Ohhh... (Opens the door to see his enormous unintended green room-mate) WHAT THE...?!"
Flora: "It finally stopped growing -- and it's SO grateful to you!"

Oon: "When, Master? When will you get the zircumite to repair me?
Gillian: "Probably our next stop, Oon. After all, zircumite is a rather common metal."
Oon (shocked): "Common?!"
Jayce: "That doesn't mean you're common, Oon -- you're special! Not everyone would have sacrified himself the way YOU did."
Oon (happily embarrassed): "Ohhh, anybody would have done it -- if they were really courageous!"
